Alternative Security Review

For peace to be meaningful it needs to be sustained. Unfortunately many wars end only to recommence some months later because the fundamental problems causing the conflict have not been resolved. Peace can only be sustained when it is supported by security, that is, being in a state that is free from the danger or threat of conflict.

The Alternative Security Review (ASR) is a 3-year project, running until the end of the current parliamentary term in 2024, to create public dialogue in the UK on human and ecological security. It is being run by Rethinking Security which is a network of UK-based organisations, academics and activists who work for a just and peaceful world based on approaches that address the underlying causes of conflict and insecurity.

Through research and civil society engagement Rethinking Security will produce a ‘human security strategy’ for the UK and its people and their engagement with the rest of the world.

The Visualising Security Project

Governments often define ‘security’ in narrow, military terms. They don’t often ask what the people they represent feel about their security.

Rethinking Security believe that we should all have our say in what makes us feel secure.

Using photography and discussion, Visualising Security allows communities and individuals across the UK to express their own priorities for security and contribute to the ASR.

The aim is to gather security concerns from a wide range of people in an accessible way. Images allow people who might never been asked what is important for their security to represent their own ideas.

Rethinking Security will use the images as part of the Alternative Security Review, bringing people’s stories into the spotlight as we advocate for security based on inclusion, sustainability and equality.

How to take part

Over the course of the project there will be online Zoom sessions for those who want to participate but don’t have a group to work with. These are for you to bring and discuss your own images of (in)security. The current dates are shown below. Click a date to register.
