Martin Stern
Martin Stern is a retired doctor. He was a hospital specialist in asthma and allergies in Leicester. As a child in Nazi-occupied Holland he was sent to the ‘ghetto’ or concentration camp (note that both terms are Nazi euphemisms) Theresienstadt at the age of five with his one year old sister because his father was a Jew. Theresienstadt, North of Prague, was one of the few such places where a small number of children survived and Martin and his sister were amongst these. Before this he had lived with a Dutch couple who pretended he was their son, in Amsterdam, close to where Anne Frank was hidden. His father, an uncle, the young Dutchman who had adopted him and a Dutch farmer who had hidden his father died in Nazi extermination camps. After the Second World War he lived in Holland for a few years before moving to England with his sister. He studied medicine in Oxford and immunology in Birmingham and lives in Leicester. He has three children and six grandchildren. His sister moved back to the Netherlands, became head of the Department of Group Psychology at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, had no children and died in 2007. Martin now devotes much of his time to studying why genocides like the Holocaust happen, teaching about such events and involving himself in activity connected with other genocides such as the Rwandan genocide of 1994 and the genocide in Darfur. He works with The Holocaust Centre in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, and with the Aegis Trust, an anti-genocide organisation and has been vice-chairman of an association of Holocaust survivors. As a student he travelled to the Sudan and Pakistan as well as European countries including the Soviet Union. He has family in Israel. He loves classical and other good music and has a passion for learning, starting piano after he retired and loves time spent with his grandchildren.
