Israel plans to build 3000+ homes in illegal West Bank settlements
Israel has settled around 440,000 in West Bank territory it captured in a 1967 Middle East war. It is currently moving forward with plans to build more than 3,000 new homes for Jewish settlers.
Most countries regard the settlements Israel has built as illegal either because they violate Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention which states that “The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.” UN Security Council Resolution 2334 states that Israel’s settlement activity constitutes a “flagrant violation” of international law and has “no legal validity”. It demands that Israel stop such activity and fulfil its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
In addition, settlements are in breach international declarations.
Israel justifies its actions by citing biblical, historical and political ties to the area, where 3 million Palestinians live.
