Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is an international event that takes place every year on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
In Coventry this year’s event will be held from 13:00 (arrival at 12:30) in the Belgrade Theatre. Free to attend but tickets must be booked here.
More information at https://www.coventry.gov.uk/hmd where the programme of the event can also be found. This includes music and a Q&A session with the main speakers.
This year’s event has a theme of Fragility of Freedom to highlight how freedom is restricted and removed from those targeted for persecution. A different theme is chosen each year by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
Fragility of Freedom is this year’s theme chosen by Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, a charity established and funded by the UK Government to promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This was the subject of the 2023 Coventry Lord Mayor’s Peace Lecture by Marc Gwamaka.
In Coventry HMD is organised by Coventry City Council.
