On 6 August 2026, to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the dropping of the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Coventry Lord Mayor’s Committee for Peace and Reconciliation organised Hiroshima Day activities in Coventry Cathedral.

In addition, Coventry Lord Mayor, Councillor Roger Bailey, invited members of the Committee and their guests to Coventry Council House for afternoon tea.

This video shows the speeches delivered at that event by Councillor Bailey, Deputy West Midlands Lieutenant David Moorcroft OBE, past Chair of the Committee Ruth Longoni and the representative of the Japanese Embassy Councillor Kikuchi.

Before and after this event, activities in the Cathedral included Taiko drumming, the telling of Sadako’s Story by Cardinal Newman School students, the folding of peace cranes and speeches by Sophie Bolt, the General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and other invited guests.
