To mark International Women’s Day, Black Voices will celebrate the life, music, faith, and love of Nina Simone at Warwick Arts Centre on International Women’s Day 2022.
Based in Birmingham, Black Voices have performed in every continent before royalty and presidents, sharing the stage with Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Hugh Masekela, Wynton Marsalis and Miriam Makeba among others.
About this performance, Shereece Storrod of Black Voices said
Nina Simone was an activist, so we do a lot of her freedom songs that were fighting for civil rights and women’s rights. We also do some of her love songs and her playful, fun songs, and then there’s her hard-hitting material, like her cover of Billie Holiday’s ‘Strange Fruit’. We really enjoy Nina’s take on ‘Strange Fruit’ and how she chose to sing it after Holiday wasn’t given permission to sing it so many times – it’s a really important song in the set for us.
Black Voices has developed her own unique sound and repertoire embracing spirituals, traditional African, Caribbean and English folk songs, jazz, gospel, pop and reggae as well as a fusion of contemporary and classical styles that have earned them worldwide recognition as an outstanding all-female vocal ensemble.
The ensemble has been Associate Artists of Town Hall Symphony Hall since 2005 and in 2021 took on a new role as Artists in Residence at Warwick Arts Centre.
