Coventry Society would like to acknowledge the great work of Marjorie “Mo” Mowlam on the Northern Ireland Peace Conference. She was the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1997 to 1999, the first woman to hold this post, and Peter Hain said she was “the catalyst that allowed politics to move forward, which led to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in April 1998. She cut through conventions and made difficult decisions that gave momentum to political progress.”

She was born in Watford, but grew up in Coventry, attending Coundon Court School. She would later be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City in 1999, an honour which only 14 people have received, and Mo is the only woman.

Blue Plaque

To acknowledge her achievements, Coventry Society would like to erect a blue plaque somewhere in the city, similar to the one shown here. For suggestions on which building the plaque should be placed, please contact Coventry Society.
