The Belgrade Theatre is proud to be supporting Black History Month this year. We are committed to creating diverse work that gives a voice to the many communities of Coventry and the region all year round, and are privileged to be able to give a platform to some of the many stories and achievements within black history.
We kick off Black History Month with a free special launch event running from 4.30pm to 7.30pm on Saturday 1 October. The event will offer a unique insight to the work of the theatre, along with the unveiling of Warwick University’s Centre for Caribbean Studies’ Embodied Islands Exhibition at the Belgrade and a special short performance by our Black Youth Theatre. There will also be a chance to network, chat and enjoy some Caribbean nibbles.
The Embodied Islands Exhibition will be on display at the Belgrade throughout October, with free workshops running alongside it. Through these Warwick University’s experience practitioners will explore photography, history and identity.
Belgrade Springboard Company, Strictly Arts, is producing two exciting and innovative showsFreeman (Thurs 29 Sept – Sat 1 Oct & Thurs 6 Oct) Green Leaves Fall (Thurs 6 – Sat 8 Oct) this October, exploring black identity, history and mental health.
Then, on Sunday 16 October, we have Diversity Rocks, a concert celebrating Coventry’s diversity. Held on the 40th anniversary of Rock Against Racism, and headlined by the Neville Staple Band, this is sure to be a fantastic night of incredible music.
Setting Shakespeare Free on Thurs 20 Oct is a special talk from Professor Tony Howard from the University of Warwick’s Multicultural Shakespeare Project. Looking at pioneering black actors Ira Aldridge and Paul Robeson, this free event is sure to get you thinking!
Finally we have Sheroes of History on Mon 24 Oct. Ever wanted to know more about black female pioneers? Aimed at children aged 5-10 years old, this session looks at icons including Wilma Rudolph, Bessie Coleman and Mary Seacole. A story-telling event to seize the imagination, with a drawing session straight after, this is a fantastic free activity for the little ones in half term.
Tickets to all of these events should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. For more information about any of these events, or to book online, call our friendly Box Office Team on 024 7655 3055 or book your tickets online. Keep an eye on our website for any updates.
