Youth promoting peace through peacebuilding, peace communication and solidarity
The fifth annual Global Peace Workshop on 24-28 July 2017 focuses on peacebuilding, peace communication and solidarity initiatives. Our goals are to examine how these processes support and empower people living through conflict, by offering practical tools, shaping and influencing public opinion, or reducing isolation. We will critically consider the roles played by conflict-affected people and external partners, where power lies, how change happens and what the contributions of global youth can be.
Organised by the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University in the UK and Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University in Turkey, the workshop has built an extensive network of more than 300 active, talented and connected peacebuilders from 126 countries. In 2017 we’re expecting up to 60 carefully selected participants to join the programme, together with our team of inspirational keynote speakers, workshop leaders and volunteers.
The fifth annual Global Peace Workshop 2017 explores the role of peacebuilding, peace communication and solidarity initiatives through three parallel workshop groups, each examining the theme in different dimensions. They are:
- Peacebuilding ‘after’ conflict – an introduction to reconstruction
- Forced displacement, local integration and return
- Peace.com – an introduction to communication for peace
Participants will have a taster session for each theme before choosing the one they would like to work on in detail. Academics and practitioners will guide participants through the key issues that emerge in each theme in fast-paced, interactive sessions that are fun and engaging.
GPW2017 participants will also have the opportunity to attend our popular Master Classes, brushing up on skills in areas such as first aid, facilitation and campaigning.
We’ve also got things covered on the social side. Our ‘cultural night’ celebrates the richness of our human family. Our generous host Mugla Sitki University provides daily short trips and events to help you to make the most of your visit to beautiful region of Turkey. Visit loggerhead sea turtles at Iztuzu beach and kick back on the final day of the workshop with our boat trip around the region’s bays and islands.
If you’re a student or practitioner engaged with issues of peace, conflict and social justice, or you have a strong background in activism (for example through volunteering), and especially if you have experience working in a conflict-affected society or working with youth, then this workshop is for you.
Applications closed on 24th of May 2017.
