RISING 16, the second annual gathering of the RISING Global Peace Forum, will be held in Coventry from 15 to 16 November 2016.
Global security is dominating the political agenda, public concerns are mounting, and nations are becoming more inward-looking. Against this background, RISING 16 brings together political, faith and community leaders; peacebuilders; diplomats; academics; the media; and members of the public in the common cause of provoking peace.
Inspired and supported by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the RISING Global Peace Forum was founded in 2015 by a partnership between Coventry University, Coventry Cathedral and Coventry City Council. As the UK’s City of Peace and Reconciliation, Coventry is uniquely placed to demonstrate both the catastrophic consequences of conflict and the transformative power of peace.
RISING 16 will examine “the ripple effect” of responding to conflict, whether with action or inaction.
The event will explore: the consequences of interventions in areas such as global migration, international conflict, community cohesion and countering violent extremism; the role of women in peace and security; and the impact of conflict on children and young people.
RISING 16 is a space for complex stories, simply told.
During the two-day gathering, a blend of high-profile speakers, panel discussions and cultural activities – as part of Coventry’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021 – will allow participants to interact, to learn and to explore solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Now in its second year, RISING is a growing global partnership that began with Coventry City Council, Coventry University and Coventry Cathedral. It will take place in buildings surrounding the ruins of the city’s medieval cathedral, preserved as a reminder of the trauma caused by World War Two. This iconic landmark has become a potent symbol for peace and reconciliation around the world.
