This event launches a new book which closes a gap in knowledge about young people’s attitudes to religious diversity, and reports data gathered across the whole of the UK as well as comparative chapters on Canada, USA and continental Europe. Reporting findings from both qualitative and quantitative research which reveal, for example, the importance of the particular social and geographical context within which young people are embedded, the volume addresses young people’s attitudes towards the range of ’world religions’ as well as non-religious stances and offers an interdisciplinary approach through the different analytical perspectives of the contributors.
The research on young people’s attitudes towards religious diversity reports on in-depth interviews and a detailed survey conducted among over 10,000 young people from across the four nations of the UK. The research was sponsored by two major Research Councils (AHRC and ESRC) as part of the Religion and Society programme. The new book launched on 24 January is:
Young People’s Attitudes to Religious Diversity
Edited by Elisabeth Arweck
Published by Routledge
Elisabeth Arweck works at the Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit, University of Warwick, and the event will also have with presentations from Dr Tania ap Sîon, Prof. Leslie Francis, Prof. Robert Jackson and responses from Dr Abdullah Sahin and Bishop David Walker.
In addition, the findings from this research have been used to inform new curriculum resources for primary school pupils from the St Mary’s Centre, Wales, introducing them to the religious diversity within the communities around them. The two new series, sponsored by the Welsh Government, comprise thirteen books, and online resources published in both English and Welsh. The two series of books are: Tania ap Siôn. Exploring Why.
