Twin Cities movement steams ahead
After the successful rejuvenation of its links with its twin cities, Coventry is embarking on more events in October.
The Twin Towns and Sister Cities Round Table video conference, dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the first contacts between citizens of Coventry and Stalingrad/Volgograd will be hosted by Coventry on Tuesday 5th October. Both cities were scarred by WW2. In October 1941, women of Coventry decided to send a message of support to the women of Stalingrad, thus laying the foundation of Citizens2Citizens Friendship. Invitations have been extended to our 27 twin cities.
The conference is being organised by a consortium, comprising Coventry Association for International Friendship, Coventry and Volgograd Bond of Friendship Committee and Positive Images Festival. Representatives of twin cities will exchange greetings and hear from Honorary Presidents of Coventry’s Twin to Win Award and UK Twin Foundation. The event will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.
This year we established a Bond of Friendship group to mark 80 years since the initial contact and have created a Twin to Win Peace Award and Twin to Win Awards. At a live ceremony on 6th October, specially designed Twin to Win Badges and certificates will be awarded to twin cities’ project leaders and to leaders of outstanding projects, which have promoted friendship, peace and people to people contact.
Ram Lakha OBE, Chair of Coventry Association for International Friendship (CAIF), commented, “It’s wonderful to see that the pioneering work of Coventry’s compassionate women eighty years back has mushroomed into a worldwide movement. We thank our twin cities and congratulate the local, regional and international initiators of projects that continue to promote friendship without frontiers.”
