Warwick University Staff and Students Demand University Ends Relationships with BAE Systems and Others
A significant number of students and staff at the University of Warwick have signed a Petition calling on the University to end to the relationship between the University of Warwick and BAE systems as well as other arms manufacturers for their complicity in what it calls Israel’s war crimes against the people of Gaza.
The Petition begins as follows:
We, the undersigned, staff and students, support the urgent call by Palestinian trade unions to “end all forms of complicity with Israel’s crimes – most urgently halting the arms trade with Israel, as well as funding and military research” in order to prevent what numerous scholars have called an “intent to commit genocide” in Gaza. As we write, Israeli bombardment has killed more than 11,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the overwhelming number of whom are civilians, including more than 4000 children. In addition, Israel has bombed hospitals, bakeries, mosques, churches, schools and universities. Under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the deliberate and disproportionate attack on civilians, property and infrastructure constitutes a war crime. According to Human Rights Watch, “providing weapons that knowingly and significantly would contribute to unlawful attacks can make those providing them complicit in war crimes.”
